Celebrate National Vet Tech Week

National Vet Tech Week runs from October 16-22, 2016.  This annual event celebrates veterinary technicians and the skilled nursing care they provide to their patients.  Veterinary technicians have become a critical part of the veterinary team over the years.

The vet tech profession is certainly one of the fastest growing animal related career paths, expected to expand more than 19 percent over the next decade.  That’s in addition to the more than 95,000 vet techs currently working in the field!  The demand is quite strong for qualified vet techs, and while you won’t get rich (NAVTA’s 2016 survey reported that most techs earn $15 to $20 per hour) it can be an interesting and fulfilling role.

There are more than 230 accredited programs offering veterinary technician degrees.  You can also go on to achieve specialty certification in a particular area of interest to maximize your skills and earning potential.  Currently recognized areas of specialization include anesthesia, behavior, clinical pathology, clinical practice, dentistry, dermatology, emergency and critical care, equine, internal medicine, nutrition, ophthalmology, surgery, and zoological medicine.

For more on the vet tech profession be sure to check out the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) website.  NAVTA established National Vet Tech Week in 1993 and continues to be a premier source of information for this career path.
